Columnist Suggests Ritter Would Be Good VP Pick

DENVER (CBS4) ― Gov. Bill Ritter is being mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate by a columnist for the Washington Post.

In Friday's edition, columnist Michael Gerson suggests Colorado's popular first-term governor as a candidate for the Democratic position, saying "Ritter has one of the most compelling stories in American politics."

Not long ago, CBS4 asked the governor about the open spot on the Obama ticket.

"He's got such keen judgment. He's going to make the right decision about who should serve as vice president of the United States of America. I'm just confident about that.

"We'll look forward to hearing who that is and hopefully he'll tell us who it is pretty soon."

At that time, Ritter had not received a call from Obama's campaign. It's unknown if he has received such a call on the subject since.

Once a Republican stronghold, Colorado has moved closer to the center in recent years, and nothing reflects that better than Ritter's election in 2006.

Ritter could certainly help Obama in what is projected to be his important home state, and give him credence with rural voters in other Western swing states.

However Ritter is staunchly pro-life, something that might not sit well with the more liberal members of the party.
