Michelle Obama has co-authored a newspaper column urging Americans to take on community service projects, saying volunteerism is fundamental to American history.
The op-ed piece was written with Jeannie Ritter, wife of Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, and appeared in Thursday's editions of The Denver Post.
"Our nation is built on a history of service, written by generations of soldiers and sailors, suffragists and freedom riders, teachers and doctors, police officers and firefighters," the column says.
Michelle Obama and Jeannie Ritter are co-chairwomen of "Delegate Service Day" on Wednesday during the Democratic convention. More than 1,000 delegates are expected to help the homeless, build a playground and do other projects.
