Minn. Aims To Finish Senate Recount By Dec. 19

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ― Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie hopes to finish the state's U.S. Senate race recount by Dec. 19, 2008.

Ritchie laid out his plan at a Capitol news conference.

Republican Norm Coleman was leading Democrat Al Franken by 238 votes out of almost 2.9 million cast as of Friday afternoon. That's within the margin triggering an automatic recount under state law.

Ritchie's timeline requires local election officials to submit recount results to his office by Dec. 5.

The state canvassing board will meet starting Dec. 16 to rule on disputed ballots. The board consists of Ritchie and four others he will appoint. Those appointments will be made from recommendations by Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Magnuson and Ramsey County Chief Judge Kathleen Gearin.
