Enthusiasts Flock To Buy Guns After Obama's Win

 Election Results
DENVER (CBS4) ― The election may have spurred a spike in gun sales.

Some gun enthusiasts are worried the Obama Administration will bring tighter restrictions on their weapons.

Since the election of Barack Obama, business has been brisk at gun shops across the Denver metro area.

Richard Taylor says customers have been flooding into his Aurora shop, buying up military-style rifles and hand guns.

"There's a lot of uncertainty about what he may do regarding current gun laws, whether there's going to be any change," Taylor said.

"Either it'll be very difficult to purchase guns, or the price of guns will skyrocket and make it somewhat cost prohibitive," gun customer Martha Witkham said.

On the campaign trail, Obama said he supports the Second Amendment and an individual's right to bear arms. But he also agreed with the D.C. handgun ban; the same ban the U.S. Supreme Court declared unconstitutional just this year.

One thing gun advocates are hoping is that Obama will have too many other pressing issues on the table to deal with new gun regulations at this time, although some experts say it could happen in a more subtle way.

"We know that his record in Illinois was nearly 100 percent hostility to gun ownership anytime there was anything to vote on," David Kopel with the Independence Institute said.

Kopel, a Second Amendment scholar, says gun advocates will likely watch the Obama Administration very closely for signs of a change in policy.

There's another indication that people are buying more guns. Several stores are noticing delays in the Colorado Bureau of Investigation background checks on gun buyers. What normally takes minutes has been taking up to two hours in some cases.
