GOP Plans Its Own Speeches During Dem Convention

DENVER (AP) ― Democrats won't have the show to themselves next week during their convention.

The GOP says it's planning a rival post near the Democratic National Convention and will put on speeches by prominent GOP opponents including former presidential nominee and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Republicans haven't said exactly where they'll set up, but party leaders say they'll have an arena for rival speeches near downtown's Pepsi Center, where Democrats gather Monday.

Speakers include Tuesday Romney, a former rival to GOP nominee John McCain. Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Romney, considered a potential vice-presidential choice for McCain, will speak in Denver before heading to Nevada on Wednesday. Romney handily won Colorado's Republican presidential caucus in February.

Romney's speech comes the same day Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is scheduled to address the convention.

A spokesman for the Republican National Committee said the party plans more speeches like Romney's, though he wouldn't say exactly who is coming.

Spokesman Bill Riggs said Republican events would "hold Barack Obama's rhetoric to account and expose his record of political expedience." Republicans would also talk up McCain, Riggs said, although there were no plans for McCain himself to appear in Denver next week.

State GOP chairman Dick Wadhams said Colorado Republicans hope to counter heavy press coverage of Democrats in town by talking up more moderate state Republicans.

Waldhams said the state GOP is counting on media accounts to include the most liberal part of the Democratic Party, giving Republicans a shot to play up a GOP alternative.

"There's no doubt we cannot compete with the sheer weight of the Democratic convention. But what we can do is offer some loyal opposition," Waldhams said.

Third-party campaigns are also headed to Denver.

Independent Ralph Nader planned to attend a rally at Denver University on Aug. 27, the night before Obama accepts his party's nomination. And Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney was scheduled to address supporters after an anti-war march through downtown Denver on Sunday, the day before the convention opens.
