Bruce Will Be Sworn In Monday
Oath To Be Taken 2 Hours After Dem Leader Wants
DENVER (AP) ―
Anti-tax crusader Douglas Bruce says he'll take the oath of office as a state representative at 10 a.m. Monday, two hours later than the speaker of the House requested.
Bruce, the author of Colorado's constitutional limits on taxes, was chosen by El Paso County Republicans last month to fill a vacant House seat.
He irritated House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, a Democrat, by waiting to take the oath until Monday, when the unexpired term will be more than half over. That will make him eligible to serve eight more years under term limits, instead of just six.
Romanoff asked Bruce to take the oath at 8 a.m. Monday, two hours before the House goes into session, but Bruce said he'll do it at 10 a.m. It's not clear why he chose the later time.
Bruce has stepped down as an El Paso County commissioner. He attended his last meeting as a commissioner on Thursday.
