Bennet Begins Planning Re-Election Campaign

DENVER (AP) ― Democrat Michael Bennet is already gearing up for his 2010 re-election campaign for the U.S. Senate, even though he hasn't taken office yet.

Gov. Bill Ritter last week chose Bennet to replace Ken Salazar, who's been nominated to become interior secretary. Two years remain in Salazar's term.

Bennet, the superintendent of Denver Public Schools, is expected to face an all-out challenge by Republicans in 2010. He isn't well known outside Denver and has never served as a lawmaker.

Bennet spokesman Matt Chandler says political consultant Craig Hughes has been hired to assemble the re-election campaign team.

The campaign is expected to file paperwork with the Federal Election Commission in the next few days.
