Ritter Praises Obama Plan To Cut Car Emissions

DENVER (AP) ― President Barack Obama's plan to curb vehicle emissions nationally will likely mean Colorado won't adopt its own vehicle standards.

Earlier this year, Gov. Bill Ritter asked state health officials to investigate establishing emissions standards that are tougher than federal rules, part of his plan to cut the state's overall emissions by 20 percent by 2020.

California and 13 other states have been urging the federal government to allow them to enact more stringent standards than the federal requirements.

Ritter praised Obama for working with both the states and the auto industry on a solution. He wants to make sure the plan will help Colorado cut emissions by 20 percent. But Ritter said Obama's plan probably means Colorado won't have to adopt one of its own.
