Lawmakers Approve Ban On State Sudan Investments
DENVER (AP) ―
The Colorado House approved a bill Wednesday barring state pension funds from investing in companies that do business in Sudan, a move sponsors say is designed to put pressure on that country to end genocide.
The measure (House Bill 1184) now goes to the Senate
"This is the strongest action that any state has ever taken against the Sudanese government," House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, said. "We are sending the message that we will not give a dime to the murder, rape, and torture of innocent people."
More than 200,000 people have been killed in a four-year conflict in Sudan. The White House has labeled the Khartoum government's brutal counterinsurgency tactics as genocide.
The government has denied the charges.
