Fifth Person Sentenced In Turtle Smuggling Case

DENVER (AP) ― A fifth person has been sentenced in a turtle skin smuggling case that involved a man who made boots for world leaders.

Jorge Caraveo, of El Paso, Texas, was sentenced today in Denver to 18 months in prison, three years of supervised release and a $300 special assessment.

He had pleaded guilty to three felony counts of smuggling for bringing more than $200,000 worth of exotic leathers and shoes into the country.

He is among seven people to plead guilty in the case.

Among those awaiting sentencing is Mexican national Martin Villegas Terrones. He made boots for customers including former Mexican President Vicente Fox and Fox's friends, including President Bush, who accepted a pair of ostrich-skin cowboy boots as a gift in 2001.
