Puppies Stolen From Adams County Kennel

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) ― Several puppies were stolen from a kennel in Adams County sometime overnight, a sheriff's office spokeswoman said Friday morning. The man who owns the kennel was charged last week with animal cruelty in Longmont.

This week's robbery happened at North Washington Street Kennel at 72nd and Washington. Investigators said it appeared two people were involved, breaking the glass on the front door and taking three to five puppies.

One witnesses said she noticed glass everywhere outside the business around 7:30 a.m.

"We don't know what these puppies are going to be used for," said Sgt. Candi Baker of the sheriff's office. "Why did they steal puppies, that is just heart wrenching."

Jeff Fortin, the kennel's owner, was cited last week with 34 counts of animal cruelty after police said they found puppies crammed in cages at the Pet Spot in Longmont, which he also owns. Fortin said two employees violated company policy in that incident.

Tuesday, someone took eight pit bull puppies from the Boulder Valley Humane Society. Six of them have been recovered.
