More Time To Comment On Lynx Habitat Proposal

FRISCO, Colo. (AP) ― The public will get extra time to comment on a federal proposal to designate more land as critical habitat for the threatened Canada lynx.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Wednesday it would open a new 30-day comment period after it releases a draft economic analysis in July.

The original comment period expired Monday.

In February, the agency said it wanted to designate nearly 43,000 square miles in Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Washington and Wyoming as critical habitat, which could put the land under tighter federal oversight.

No land was included in Colorado, where lynx are a "species of concern" and are being reintroduced.

The agency originally suggested 1,800 square miles in three states.

Public hearings are planned but no dates have been set.
