Bears Track Trash Days In Search Of Food

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) ― Some bears in Colorado are getting aggressive in their search for food as the dry weather drivers them out of the high country where sources for nutrition have become scarce. The Division of Wildlife reports nearly 50 incidents of people encountering bears in the metro area since April.

The agency is also hearing about a growing number of bear break-ins like a recent one in Idaho Springs.

A bear tore the siding of Kirk Jones' garage to get to the trash.

"There's a lot of wood for him to get through and come through the garage door," Jones said.

Wildlife officers said they've had more than 20 cases of bears breaking into cars, homes and garages along the Front Range.

Experts said some bears have even learned when garbage collection day is in a neighborhood.

"It's everyone's responsibility, every home and neighborhood," said Jennifer Churchill of the DOW.

Two bears have been killed this year in Douglas County because of encounters.

Last year, the DOW put down more than 60 bears across Colorado. That was a record.
