Boy Scout Troop Pays It 4ward To Tornado Victims

Written for the Web by CBS4 producer Libby Smith
The idea behind CBS4's Pay it Forward Colorado project is to give $1,000 to a Coloradan (or group of Coloradans) who will use the money to change someone else's life. Submit your ideas on YouReport

WINDSOR, Colo. (CBS4) - A week after a deadly tornado ripped through Windsor, residents are still picking up the pieces of their lives. Chuck and Cathy Gully and their two children are among them. "We lost everything," Cathy Gully told CBS4.

The home they rented is now ruined. Toys, clothing, and belongings are scattered around the yard. The furniture that's still inside the house is not usable. The house and their car are destroyed.

"You never think it's going to be you. It's devastating," Gully added.

Gillian, 3, is still trying to figure out what's happened to her life. She said "a tomato bit our house."

"She has no toys to play with, she can't run around like her normal self in her own house," Gully said.

Renters insurance will help them replace their lost belongings, but the Gully family will have to come up with enough money for another security deposit to get into a new home. That's where Boy Scout Troop 184 comes in.

"I think they're wonderful," Gully said.

Members of the Loveland troop fanned out across the Gully's property and sifted through the debris.

"It is devastating and it's sad. It's hard to believe this could happen here," one Boy Scout named Eric told CBS4.

The troop is not only lending a helping hand they're giving the Gullys $1,000. That's the same amount that they received through a Pay It Forward project in March. The Boy Scouts were victims of theft. A den mom stole nearly $8,000 from the group's bank account. Last month that mom was made to pay every cent of it back, so the Boy Scouts felt they should pay it forward with the money they were given.

"We appreciate it, we think it's a great gesture," Gully said.

There are dozens of families just like the Gullys that are struggling in the wake of the tornado. To make a donation, just call 211.
