Loveland Students Build Home, Learn About Geometry

LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) ― As people continue to struggle in this economy, students at Loveland High School are helping families beat the recession by building affordable housing.

Construction sites have been serving as the classroom for more than 100 students in the school's Geometry in Construction class.

Working along with a home builder students in the class just completed the new house of Nathaniel Wooten and his two daughters.

For eight months Krystyna, 6, and Lyllee, 3, have been sleeping in churches with their father and moving every week.

"We were sleeping in classrooms. (My daughters) had cots," he told CBS4.

The Interfaith Hospitality Network is providing Wooten with the home as a rental for 2 years as he gets his family back on its feet.

Teacher Scott Burke said the enthusiasm of the students in the class has been surprising.

"The kids will say to us at the end of Saturday 'What time do we come in on Sunday?' and we have to say to them, 'We need a day off,'" Burke said.

He said the students are learning more than the practical applications of geometry. They are learning about economics and how how much people in their own community need help during this recession.

This year donations of lumber and supplies are down so a parent at Loveland High asked CBS4 News to Pay it Forward with a $1,000 check to keep the students' dream of building more homes going.

They will use the money for drywall materials and insulation for the current house that's under construction.
