The heat is on.
Denver broke the record high Tuesday. The temperature at Denver International Airport hit 90 degrees after 1 p.m., making it the first 90-degree reading of the year. The previous record was 89 degrees set in 2006.
It's not unusual to experience this kind of heat in May. There have been plenty of 90 degree records set during the month. The highest temperature ever recorded in May was 95 degrees back in 1942.
The warm temperatures have been causing significant melting in the high country. The National Weather Service has issued flood advisories and watches for the Yampa, Crystal, Colorado, Eagle and Elk rivers.
Because temperatures across the state have been above normal a Red Flag Warning is also in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for Pagosa Springs, Ouray, Durango, Cortez and surrounding areas.
