Perry Rejects Clemency Recommendation

Texas Governor Rick Perry has rejected a rare recommendation from the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles to spare the life of a condemned man, CBS station KTVT-TV reports.

On Wednesday the board recommended that Perry commute the death sentence of Robert Lee Thompson to life in prison. The board rarely recommends commutation of sentences. Only the governor can commute a death sentence.

Late Thursday afternoon, Perry issued a statement saying he was rejecting that advice and upholding the death sentence. Thompson was scheduled to be executed Thursday evening.

Thompson was sent to death row for his part in the fatal shooting of a Houston convenience store clerk 13 years ago. The 34-year-old Thompson was condemned under the Texas law of parties for being an accomplice when 29-year-old Mansoor Bhai Rahim Mohammed was gunned down 13 years ago.

Thompson's partner, Sammy Butler, received a life term while Thompson got death.

Since he became governor in 2000, Perry has commuted one death sentence other than those the U.S. Supreme Court ordered him to commute. Texas has executed 204 people since Perry became governor.

With his execution Thursday night at 6:20, Thompson became the 205th.
