A Manhattan man who threatened to kill U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor and said he wanted to kill President Obama has been arraigned on charges of making a terroristic threat.
A criminal complaint says John Zaubler called 911 from an apartment last Saturday and said he was going to kill Sotomayor by "blowing her up," because he did not want his girlfriend to go to federal prison.
The complaint also says he "wanted to kill President Barack Obama by blowing him up."
The 48-year-old defendant's Manhattan Criminal Court arraignment was done by videoconference from Bellevue Hospital's prison ward. He did not enter a plea.
Judge James Gibbons ordered a psychiatric examination for Zaubler. The judge ordered him held without bail and scheduled a hearing for July 6.
Fran Hoffinger, who reportedly is John Zaubler's lawyer, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. There was no phone number listed under his name.
Sotomayor has garnered criticism for comments she made in 2001 to a Berkeley conference on law and diversity, where she said, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
