Women In Colorado Call Relatives Near China Quake
DENVER (CBS4) ―
People in Colorado with loved ones who live near the epicenter of Monday's 7.9 magnitude earthquake in central China spent the day trying to contact relatives. Tens of thousands may have died in the massive tremor centered northwest of Chengdu.
Jessica Liu's mother was home when the quake hit.
"She was actually taking a nap, she just felt like the bed was jumping, jumping up and down," Liu told CBS4.
Julia Xu's brother was at work and told her he ran outside.
"He can see the whole building is moving in front of him so, he said 'it's kind of very scary, all the people are running outside,'" Xu said.
Both women said their families live in Chengdu.
"So I just called everyone I pretty much had contact information for, like my cousin, my aunt, and grandmas," Liu said.
The anxiety increased when images of the damage appeared on Web sites and television news reports.
"I'm just crying you know, sitting in front of my desk and I cannot reach anybody," Xu said.
She finally did, learning that people drove to the country and away from city buildings to make sure they were safe during aftershocks.
Both said their families are okay, even though thousands more need to be rescued and cared for.
"People lost their family members and also lost their homes, so really yeah, deep sorrow," Liu said.
