THE PICKS (May 12-16)

Go, Speed Racer -- go, Speed Racer -- go, Speed Racer, go!
Yes, Speed Racer -- go anywhere but into movie theaters. Oops. Too late! Won't be there long, though. It's dying at the box office, Narnia opens this weekend and Indiana Jones opens the 22nd -- poor Speed is going to get smooshed.

THEATER

DOUBT (Tony Award Winning Drama!)

Now on stage from the Denver Center Theater Company. Doubt offers something different -- raw emotional power on stage and questions that linger long after you leave the theater.

A CHORUS LINE

The classic broadway dance musical opens a new national tour at the Buell.

3 MO' DIVAS

Marion J. Caffey's celebration of the female voice. Three great talents in a show that is part concert, part theater, part comedy. Very different, very exciting. Some of the solos are worth the price of admission alone.

FOR TICKETS TO SHOWS AT THE DENVER CENTER CALL (303) 893-4100. GO ONLINE AT denvercenter.org.

A great musical with a tremendous cast. AK Klimpke has made Will his own over the years. I can't see any one else playing the role. Delightful.

COMING SOON TO THE GALLERIA: GIRLS ONLY
(303) 893-4100

GIRLS ONLY will return this fall to the Garner Galleria Theater. The Denver Center will produce the show and tour it around the country ... if not the world. And we saw it first! Well, I didn't. I'm a boy. But -- many women in Denver did. I think they're really going places.

MOVIES

Opening 5/9

SPEED RACER
RATED PG

Neon pulsating high intensity comic book nonsense from the dudes who brought us the Matrix trilogy. Headache inducing. So over the top, it's not even fun. No plot either. Anybody got a fresh idea? Hollywood could certainly used one.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS
RATED PG-13

Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz are mismatched newlyweds who must get along after winning a Vegas jackpot. Eh.

Open 5/2

IRON MAN
RATED PG-13
Robert Downey Jr.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Jeff Bridges

One of my favorite Marvel characters in a film that kicks off the summer season perfectly. One of the reasons I love him is that Tony Stark is a guy with no superpowers, no radioactive spiders chomping at him, just a billion or two dollars behind him so he can build himself a flying supersuit. Jeff Bridges makes a good corporate bad guy, too. Although I have to wonder about Gwyneth Paltrow's "Pepper Potts" character. Is that a comic book name or what?

DVD This Week

THIS WEEK:

MAY 13 RELEASES:

THE GREAT DEBATERS
RATED PG-13

Denzel Washington in an inspiring true story.

MAD MONEY
RATED PG-13

Katie Holmes in a thoroughly depressing comedy.

INDIANA JONES -- THE ADVENTURE COLLECTION
RATED PG

Raiders, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade, all in one box. Give the timing of this release (May, big summer movie time) you'd figure that Indy is coming  back in a new adventure. But that's silly! Harrison Ford would be like ... 90 or something, wouldn't he?

RESTAURANT

CHEEKY MONK
534 E. COLFAX

I just love the idea of this -- a bar with a focus on the art of the Belgian Brew. 16 Belgian beers on draught.

BOOKS

THE TEN CENT PLAGUE
by David Hajdu
$26
Farrar, Straus and Giroux

How the burgeoning comic book industry of the 1950's was destroyed by "right minded" people concerned for the welfare of "our children." Most of their self righteousness was based on bad science, bigotry and political posturing. Hmmmmmmm -- sound familiar?
