Aspirin May Be Best Bet For Women Vs Breast Cancer

(CBS4) A new mega study from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute has some interesting news about cutting your risk of breast cancer. A look at more than 2 million women finds those who take a daily aspirin have a 13 percent lower risk of breast cancer, while those who take a daily ibuprofen had a 21 percent lower risk.

Pretty significant numbers, but there are a few things to keep in mind. There are obviously the side effects to think about. You've heard both aspirin and ibuprofen (and medicines like it) can increase the risk of stomach bleeding and so forth. Plus there is the issue of mixing and matching medicines (if you are on any other drugs on a regular basis, for example, Coumadin and aspirin is a killer combo).

Then there's this to consider- we know aspirin protects the heart, and in women, especially lowers the risk of stroke. Yet ibuprofen does not -- and in fact may even cancel out the effects of the protective aspirin.

All things considered, if your doctor gives you the OK, sounds like a daily aspirin may be the best choice for the heart, brain, and breasts.
