Dad Criticizes University's Policy After Son Dies
Written by Jodi Brooks
DENVER (CBS4) ―
A Littleton father told CBS4 his son died from drinking too much alcohol at a fraternity house at the University of Kansas.
Jason Wren was a pledge at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house. He died Sunday.
The death brings heartbreak to his father Jay Wren who said his son "had problems that we didn't really realize."
Jason graduated last spring from Arapahoe High School. He attended KU, and this past Sunday afternoon the 19-year-old freshman was found dead in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house.
Jason Wren had consumed a lethal amount of alcohol. Lawrence, Kan., police told Jay Wren his son drank three margaritas, a dozen beers and was seen carrying a bottle of whiskey.
Jay said his son "was kicked out of his dorm for issues and we tried to find out about them, but because of privacy issues we as parents were not allowed."
Jason apparently told his father he was kicked out of the dorm for drinking and other violations. His father confronted KU after his son's death and was told they only tell parents of such problems if the student agrees.
"I wish we'd known more about his drinking on campus," Jay said.
In Colorado, it's always the option of the university to contact parents.
CBS4 checked with the University of Colorado, Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado. Officials there all said they would notify parents without the student's consent if the student was under 21 and repeatedly violated alcohol or drug policies.
It is a warning Jay Wren never got. "Don't raise a glass for Jason. Set it down for Jason in his memory," he said.
"We worry about kids drinking and driving. Well, just drinking can kill you."
The funeral for Jason Wren will be on Monday night at Cherry Hills Community Church.
