Littleton Dad: Son Died After Drinking At KU

DENVER (CBS4/AP) ― The father of a Colorado teen found dead in a fraternity house at the University of Kansas says alcohol is to blame.

Lawrence, Kan., police identified the student found dead Sunday as Jason Christopher Wren, 19, of Littleton, Colo., a Sigma Alpha Epsilon pledge.

The Shawnee County coroner's office in Topeka confirms an autopsy was completed Monday but declined to release the results. But Wren's father, Jay Wren, says police told him his son drank margaritas, whiskey and as many as a dozen beers before he died.

Sources say after passing out, his fraternity brothers put him in bed hoping he would sleep it off, but Jason Wren stumbled out of bed and his friends again put him back in bed. That's where he was found dead.

"These kids aren't even educated to how much poison is in their body after all these drinks and how it can kill them," said Jay Wren. "Hopefully they'll learn from Jason."

Jason Wren was a pre-business major and a midfielder on the men's lacrosse team at KU. His father said his son moved in to the SAE house a couple of weeks ago after getting kicked out of his KU dorm for drinking and other violations.

Jay Wren said after looking back, there were warning signs of Jason's potential problem with alcohol.

"As we look back there were incidents. You write it off as 'oh, kids will be kids and that's part of growing up,' Jay Wren said. "We drank as kids and you think, 'Okay, he just had a drink or two too much,' but didn't realize it can kill you."

Friends in Colorado remembered Jason Wren as a well-liked guy who enjoyed sports.

"I would call him determined, tough, fearless," said Mike Campbell, Arapahoe High assistant principal and varsity football coach. Wren played baseball and lacrosse, and lettered for three years as a defensive back on the school's football team.

"He was a lovable person," Campbell said. "Everyone liked being around him."

After the death the president of the SAE fraternity called the Wren family to express condolences. Jay Wren requested the fraternity ban alcohol in Jason's honor. The fraternity is now considering the request.

The funeral for Jason Wren will be Monday night at Cherry Hills Community Church.
