Ft. Lupton Man Is One Of The World's Strongest
Written by Sadie Hughes
DENVER (CBS4) ―
A Fort Lupton man is one of the world's strongest men, but he's working to be even stronger.
Brian Shaw, 27, got a little extra training on Wednesday by pulling more than five times his own weight.
At 6 feet 8 inches tall and 385 pounds, Shaw has pulled plenty of heavy things that actually make him look small.
"Probably the biggest thing I've ever pulled is a Hercules C130 transport plane. That was at World's Strongest Man last year. Then this year we did a Boeing 777," Shaw said.
He also adds that fire trucks and school buses are part of his pulling repertoire.
He began his strongman career in 2006 after finishing playing basketball in college.
"I'm just a real competitive guy and I've watched these competitions since I was a kid and I just wanted to see if I could do it," Shaw said.
Part of Shaw's training secret is eating a lot. He said he eats six to eight eggs, wheat toast, cereal and a protein shake for breakfast. At lunch and dinner he consumes a pound of chicken or beef topped off with potatoes and milk. Overall he squeezes in six to eight meals a day and two to four hours of training.
He put his training to the test on Wednesday by pulling 2,000 pounds or 1 ton of KBPI fans. The fans stood on a flatbed trailer that was hooked up to a pick-up truck. He pulled the fans, flatbed and truck after having a rope and harness attached to his upper torso.
"Pulling is actually my specialty, one of my better events in these competitions," Shaw said.
While it is his specialty, Shaw said it is not easy.
"A heavy pull is one of the most grueling things that you can do in a strong man competition," Shaw said.
He's hoping that he'll be able to further demonstrate his strength by being crowned the World's Strongest Man in the next world competition.
Shaw has placed 1st in the All American Strongman Challenge in Los Angeles, 3rd in the Fortissumus Strongest Man on Earth Competition in Quebec, and 3rd in the World's Strongest Man competition in Malta.
On Nov. 14 he heads to the World Strongman Super Series at Muscle Beach in Venice Beach, Calif. He hopes to capture that title so he can qualify for the world final in Sweden later this year.
