Boy Injured After He's Run Over By Winnebago

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) ― An 11-year-old boy is recovering from injuries suffered after authorities said he rode his bicycle through a stop sign and was run over by a Winnebago in Boulder.

Police said Koby Lawson was struck about 2:30 p.m. Sunday after riding into the path of a Winnebago traveling about 40 mph.

Lawson and his bike ended up wedged between the front of the vehicle and the roadway. Boulder Police Sgt. Pat Wyton said he was dragged about 90 feet down the street before the Winnebago could stop.

Authorities said Lawson was wearing a helmet, but it came off in the collision.

"My helmet has some really bad scrapes on it and those would've been on my head and if they weren't I would've been dead," Lawson said.

"I can't stress enough the importance of wearing a helmet," said Lawson's father, Travis.

Officers used jacks to raise the vehicle, put it on blocks, then extricated Lawson.

Police said it appears Lawson suffered only a bad case of road burns covering his back and arm and a fractured ankle.

"If you're going to get hit by a car, get hit by a Winnebago instead of a car," Lawson said.

Correction: Previous versions of this story said Lawson was cited by Boulder police for not obeying traffic laws. That was not accurate.
