Half-Marathon Next Step In Weight Loss Journey

Written for the Web by CBS4 Special Projects Producer Libby Smith

LOUISVILLE, Colo (CBS4) ― The Denver Marathon is going to be the next milestone in one runner's amazing journey. Kim Ferguson will be running the half-marathon which is a goal she never dreamed she could accomplish just 18 months ago.

"I was a completely different person. I weighed 300 pounds and had a hard time walking," Ferguson told CBS4.

Ferguson's weight loss journey started with gastric bypass surgery.

"All it is is a tool…makes your tummy smaller, and then from there on you have to do the right things and make the right choices," Ferguson explained.

Making the right choices helped Kim lose 140 pounds. She focused on decreasing how much she ate and increasing her workouts, but she needed more.

"I needed to do something different. You can only do food for so long, you can only go to the gym and be on the treadmill for so long."

That's when she started running and made the half-marathon her goal.

"I want that medal. I'm really looking forward to getting that medal."

Kim already has the real prize, a total life change. She went from limiting herself in terms of food to expanding her capabilities and broadening her horizons.

"By shifting my focus and concentrating on running instead of food and diet and all the kind of stuff and I really have to lose weight. It's really me become a stronger person."
