DENVER (CBS4) ― For the first time in 15 years the National Weather Service will be able to record up to the minute weather information in central Denver. A new state-of-the-art weather monitoring station is up and running at City Park Golf Course.

In 1995, in accordance with National Weather Service recording standards, the official weather recording station for Denver had to be moved to Denver International Airport. Since, then there has not been an official weather station in the city.

This has caused a bit of controversy over the years. Being that DIA is 18 miles away from Downtown Denver, the weather can sometimes vary dramatically from what is actually happening in town. For example, on some cold days the temperature can be as much as 10 to 15 degrees cooler at the airport.

This will fill a big hole in the Denver weather record. From 1948 until the opening of DIA in 1995, the official weather readings for Denver were taken at the old Stapleton Airport site. When the official weather station was moved to DIA, it left a gap in the NWS data network for central Denver.

This is also a first-of-its-kind in Denver -- a partnership that includes both public and private entities. The station is owned and operated by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. But it had to include a collaboration of five different public and private groups to bring real time weather back to the city. The Museum, Vaisala (global company based in Louisville, donated the weather instruments), Denver's Parks and Recreation Department (agreed to using the site at City Park Golf Course), The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Weather Service (had to approve of the site and equipment to be "official").

"The museum was pleased to be a part of establishing and supporting this new facility, especially as it allows us to re-establish the climate record for central Denver, data that has been missing for more than 10 years," said Dave Noel, Vice President of Information Technology, Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
