Dive Rescue International Trains In Golden

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) ― As more Coloradans travel to enjoy the state's creeks and rivers, emergency crews want to be ready. So Dive Rescue International is taking advantage of the high water in Golden to train for trouble this week.

Golden is one of the premier spots in the country for whitewater search and rescue training because fighting against Colorado's extreme runoff is an intense experience.

"To come out here, you're adrenaline kicks up, you know, a few notches," Gary Bruns with Nebraska Search and Rescue said.

Dive Rescue International hosted rescuers from as far away as South Carolina. The rescuers combed Clear Creek as part of search training on Wednesday. The current was much stronger than it looked, making the effort very hard.

"They take back, hopefully, a lot of good training, a lot of good knowledge and they take back something to their department that they can teach," said Eric Lutz from Greenville, SC.

The classes are meant to push the trainees to the edge. On Wednesday, the water was so rough the exercises had to be moved out of Clear Creek Canyon to downtown Golden.

"This is probably as bad as I'll ever see it," a trainee said. "So to take that back home and apply that to where I'm at is worth it. It just gives me greater expansive knowledge."

"If you can do it here, you can go home to that lazy little creek or whatever might be in your neighborhood and it's probably going to seem a little bit easier to do that rescue," John Ashford with the Golden Fire Department said.

The training wasn't just for out-of-town rescue crews. Many Colorado departments participated in the training since they deal the high waters every day in the summer.
