Skiers and boarders often park along frontage roads before heading to the slopes at Vail. But now, Colorado Department of Transportation plans to start charging the City of Vail if there are too many days where cars line the frontage roads.
CDOT said if therre are 25 days where people park along the frontage road, they will charge Vail $20,000.
Vail Resorts has offered to pick up the tab, because those cars almost always belong to people trying to ski on their mountain.
The Department of Transportation wants to sell the frontage road. Vail has been offered $11 million to take it, but that might not be enough.
"I'm guessing it's too low," said Stan Zemler, Vail town manager. "What we have committed to over the course of next year with the collaboration with CDOT, we'll study what's involved with taking over the frontage road."
The town said they've worked at creating more than 100 new, free parking spaces.
Vail Resorts said if they get to build the new Ever Vail project, the problem might solve itself.
