Vail Boosting Bus Fees, Cutting Service

VAIL, Colo. (AP/CBS4) ― Vail Valley skiers could see fewer public buses, shorter hours and higher fares this season if the city approves some budget cuts proposed by the ECO Transit system.

The plan would increase a one-month $60 bus pass to $100. Fares would got from $3 to $4, with service stopped after midnight. The proposal calls for about 70 hours of daily bus service.

The system also proposes to extend its off-peak "mud season" April through November schedule all year. That would mean fewer trips during the ski and snowboarding season.

"It could be food, definitely shopping, some meals, so you would have to relocate that from somewhere else, or cut back on something," said bus pass holder Allison Jaosefowitz.

The bus system faces a $2 million budget shortfall. "If such trends continue as they have throughout the year, we'll be about $1.8 million to $2 million short," said Kris Friel with Eagle County.

The proposals will go to transit agency's full board next week. The bus system served 1.2 million riders last year.
