Layoffs Possible At Colorado Universities
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Economic uncertainty has Colorado universities taking a close look at ways to cut costs and some university officials say layoffs could well be part of the budget picture.
At Colorado State University and the University of Colorado, officials say it's too early to tell if there will be layoffs and how significant they might be. But in higher education, where 70 to 80 percent or more of the budget goes to personnel, avoiding layoffs may be difficult as universities tighten their belts.
At CSU there's already been $1.5 million in cuts recently as the new interim president has streamlined the administration. Now CSU is planning ahead for state budget cuts by telling vice presidents to prepare budget reduction plans for various degrees of cutbacks.
"Layoffs are generally pretty much a last effort in a lot of these situations," said Brad Bohlander, CSU Spokesperson. "Every department, every vice president is looking at potential budget reductions. A lot of those come from cutting open positions, from cutting services, from streamlining the type of work that we do."
The spokesperson for the University of Colorado system says they're expecting to have a much better idea of how deep the cuts will be in the next week or so as the legislature begins to tackle the budget and he says they're expecting the worst.
CU already has an informal hiring freeze. They've stopped plans for growth and stopped all major capital purchases.
