Udall Leads Schaffer In CBS4/Rocky Poll Of Voters

DENVER (CBS4) ― Rep. Mark Udall, the Democratic candidate for the open Colorado U.S. Senate seat, holds a 6 point lead over Republican opponent Bob Schaffer in a CBS4/Rocky Mountain News poll released Thursday afternoon.

Udall had support from 44 percent of registered voters polled from Aug. 11 to 13 across the state. Schaffer, a former Congressman, had 38 percent.

Independent candidate Buddy Moore had 5 percent and Green party candidate Bob Kinsey had 2 percent.

When asked about their opinion of Udall, 34 percent said they had a very or somewhat favorable opinion of the Democrat, while 24 percent said they had a very or somewhat unfavorable opinion of him. Twenty-nine percent said they had no opinion of Udall.

Schaffer registered 27 percent who said they had very or somewhat favorable opinion of the Republican, while 22 percent said they had a very or somewhat unfavorable opinion of him. Thirty-nine percent said they had no opinion of Schaffer.

Political polling analyst Lori Weigel said the high "no opinion" numbers on both candidates can be attributed to the early stage of the campaign and the fact that many voters haven't started following the campaign.

Analysts also said Udall's lead follows a larger trend that show a diminishing of the GOP brand in Senate and Congressional races across the country.

The poll questioned 500 likely voters and has a margin of error plus or minus 4.33 percent.
