Denver Offers Holiday Cooking Oil Recycling
DENVER (CBS4) ―
Some people had been hanging onto jugs of it for a couple of years -- used turkey grease. Luckily they had a place to take it Saturday.
The City of Denver had one recycling station set up in downtown Denver where people could dump their old grease.
The city contracts with a company that takes the grease and turns it into cooking products and biodiesel.
One city employee on site said he's glad to see it recycled because they often have people dumping it down the drain, which causes major problems.
"Well, we've had instances in which some of the sanitary sewers get plugged up and will actually flood three or four homes on a block or back up sewage into their basements," city employee Darren Mollendor said.
People also illegally dump grease down storm drains thinking it'll be treated. But the runoff that goes into storm drains on city streets goes directly into streams and rivers.
