Truck Driver Who Saved Children Back On The Road

GILCREST, Colo. (CBS4) ― A trucker who saved two young children from a burning SUV says it's great to finally be back to work after the terrible crash. He's on the road again eight months after the haunting accident.

Jorge Orozco-Sanchez was at the wheel when the SUV crossed into his lane on a county road near US 85 in Weld County. The vehicles collided head on. Orozco-Sanchez was able to save the children, but not their mother.

Orozco-Sanchez said Wednesday that it felt great to be behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler again. It was his first day back delivering cattle feed in northern Colorado.

"It feels like a dream. Right after the accident I thought I was done with my career as a truck driver," Orozco-Sanchez said.

The head-on crash happened in October.

"It's hard, but I guess you just learn how to live with everything," he said.

When word of his heroics spread, Orozco-Sanchez was offered a deal so he could afford payments on a used truck and trailer and insurance. Goodyear donated 18 new tires and the hero trucker is now rolling again.

"When I first drove the truck with the trailer I drove maybe 5 miles -- so many good memories -- and I started crying, so I had to pull over and finish my crying and then keep on going."

Orozco-Sanchez says he appreciates everything that is around him more.

"Try not to be selfish. Be more in contact with everybody and appreciate every little thing."

On Wednesday he said he was simply appreciating being able to work and having a truck to drive again.

"I'm very happy, excited. Very thankful to all the folks who helped me get back on the road."

He acknowledges that people see him as a hero, but says he feels like he's really just a normal person who was in the right place at the right moment to save two lives.
