High Country Teemed With Holiday Weekend Activity

Eisenhower Tunnel Sees One Of Its Busiest-Ever Days

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (AP/CBS4) ― It was a busy travel weekend in the High Country in Colorado.

More than 47,000 vehicles passed through the Eisenhower Tunnel on Friday, making it the tunnel's fifth busiest travel day ever. Volume was just above that of July 3, 2003.

Sunday was another busy travel day, too. Eastbound traffic on Interstate 70 between Vail and Denver caused major delays. Traffic was backed up all the way from Idaho Springs to the tunnel on the interstate for several hours in the afternoon.

AAA Colorado said it was likely many Coloradans chose to vacation close to home to save money during the recession.

Breckenridge's holiday parade was packed with visitors and restaurants and retailers said they were very busy. The outlet stores in Silverthorne stayed open until midnight on Friday to attract customers.

Tim West, the supervisor at Main Street Outlet in Breckenridge, said visitors don't seem to be spending as much as last year.
