A young boy who got trapped under a car in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Evergreen was picking up a penny when he was hit.
Joshua Johnson, 3, had just finished shopping with his grandmother at the Wal-Mart when he bent down in the parking lot to pick up the penny and was run over by another shopper who didn't even know she had hit the boy.
Six bystanders, including a West Metro firefighter and Scott Martin, an Evergreen volunteer firefighter (who was off duty at the time), rushed to help. They literally lifted the 3,000 to 4,000 pound car off of the little boy, who was pinned in such a way that he couldn't breathe, according to Martin.
Joshua's family says his condition is still touch and go.
Nick Johnson, Joshua's father, said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon that Joshua was actually saying a prayer in his oxygen mask while being transported to the hospital.
Nick said Joshua will have some great signs of moving forward and then take some steps back and there is still great concern for his life. He said Joshua can hear and will open his left eye every once in a while.
Joshua is currently in the intensive care unit at The Children's Hospital with broken ribs, a deep burn on his backside from the muffler on the car, and has lots of swelling. He's also fighting an infection in his lung.
"He's probably scared out of his mind. He doesn't know what's going on and he flails," Nick said. "Is he going to have any permanent injury? Is he going to live a normal life?"
