Ground Broken On Olympic-Sized Pool In Thornton

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4) ― Thornton and the Adams 12 Five Star School District have teamed up on a major project to build an Olympic-sized pool across from Horizon High School.

The town and school district are behind the effort and will each take different responsibilities to take care of the facility once it's complete.

Officials broke ground on the pool Tuesday.

Voters in the school district approved the bond for the aquatic center in 2004. Thornton gave the land to the district and will maintain all of the landscaping around the facility. The district is financing the construction of the facility and will maintain the building, pool and parking areas.

The facility will have seating for 800 and the pool area can be divided into three different, separate areas for swimming, diving and practicing.

The price tag for the pool is almost $19.7 million and it should open a year from this August.

It'll be used for competitive swimming, practice, lessons and other activities. When the pool is not being used for district activities and classes, it will be used available for general public use. Current expectations are for that to be about 40 percent of the time.

District officials are hoping to host state and regional events in the future.
