Denver Taxi Drivers Rally For New Companies

DENVER (CBS4) ― Taxi drivers from the Denver area rallied at the state Capitol Tuesday morning to express concern about what they call unnecessary government restrictions.

Colorado lawmakers recently rewrote the state's taxi law to open up the Denver taxi market to new business. The Public Utilities Commission interprets the law.

The PUC planned a meeting later Tuesday to decide whether to lift a "cap" on cab companies and allow new ones to open up in the Denver area.

"It is absolutely unfair for existing companies to shut out experienced drivers from starting a new business," said Valerie Bayham of the Institute for Justice, which is supporting the taxi drivers' efforts. "They shouldn't have to hire accountants, attorneys, and economists to decide whether they can get into the business or not and existing companies shouldn't be able to block new company applicants. That's like asking McDonalds whether a new Burger King should be able to open in Denver. And that's just un-American."

The PUC was set to consider applications for three new taxi companies during Tuesday's meeting.
