Republican congressman Tom Tancredo has fired off a wisecracking press release saying he wants to be a professor of conservative politics at the University of Colorado -- a school often criticized by conservatives as being too liberal.
The outspoken opponent of illegal immigration is suggesting classes in "English Only 101" and "American Assimilation." He's also proposing a 20-foot-high fence around the border of the university's Boulder campus.
"We'd get rid of all these cultural studies, you know," Tancredo told CBS4's Terry Jessup. "We'd try to teach kids what it means to be an American."
As for the proposed fence he said, "Yeah, it could keep the people that shouldn't be on the campus off," he said.
Tancredo spokesman T.Q. Houlton said Wednesday Tancredo doesn't really want a job at CU when he retires from Congress in January. He's just poking fun at reports that CU wants to establish a new position for a professor of conservative thought and policy.
CU is considering a $9 million program to bring high-profile political conservatives to teach on the left-leaning campus, the Rocky Mountain News reported Tuesday.
The program would bring a rotating cast of scholars, historians, politicians and media personalities to a town often ridiculed by the political right as "the People's Republic of Boulder."
The first scholar could be on campus next year for a one- or two-year stint, CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard told the Rocky. University officials said they hope the fund would yield the $200,000-plus per year necessary to provide a stipend and a staff person.
"Congressman Tancredo is welcome to joke about this if he wants to that's fine with us," Hilliard said. "What we want people to know is this is a serious proposal, and we are looking for a scholar, national quality and renown, to come teach here, and we think we're going to get one."
Tancredo briefly ran for the GOP presidential nomination last year. In recent weeks he has been pushing for a fence on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Tancredo to Apply for Conservative CU Job
Promises to verify citizenship of every student before each class
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Littleton) today sent in an application for the new conservative professor job at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Tancredo, a former teacher, was excited that the liberals on the CU staff decided to diversify their educational programs.
I should be the clear favorite for the job, Tancredo said. Who doesnt want a slightly used Congressman, with a 98% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union, educating their children?
As for his references, Tancredo listed conservative commentator Pat Buchanan as well as the entire Minutemen organization.
The Tancredo suggested curriculum would include Western Civilization and the threat of Islamofascism, English Only 101, and American Assimilation, which would replace Chicano and ethnic studies.
Tancredo also plans to secure the border around the CU campus with a 20 foot high fence.
Tancredo concluded, In addition to my experience as a teacher and politician, I promise to have immigration officials check every student prior to all my classes.
