DougCo Shooting Suspect Son Of Denver Officer

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4/AP) ― One of the two suspects in a shooting that wounded a Douglas County sheriff's deputy in Castle Rock last June is the son of a Denver police officer. Brandin Kreuzer's father Kevin serves on Mayor John Hickenlooper's security detail and was shot himself four years ago in the line of duty.

Brandin Kreuzer of Sedalia and Taylor Moudy of Castle Rock, both 19, were arrested Tuesday. They are being held on suspicion of attempted first-degree homicide, burglary, robbery and motor vehicle theft.

Moudy was arrested on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder where he is a student, authorities said. He then told them where to find Kreuzer, who was arrested at his home.

Police said stolen property and several weapons were recovered from the home of one of the suspects.

It was the culmination of a five-month investigation. Detectives talked to a lot of people and matched up DNA and fingerprint evidence.

"Anytime we're dealing with individuals who would take, who would actually shoot at law enforcement officers, to society, I think those are the most dangerous individuals," Lt. Kevin Duffy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department said.

A deputy was wounded in the arm in the June 28 incident when the suspects allegedly robbed a Circle K convenience store while wearing body armor. One of the suspects was carrying an assault rifle. The deputy was treated and released at a hospital.

"I'm being shot at, I'm being shot at," the deputy called over the radio on June 28.

"All units, attention all units, shots being fired, 626 Adams is being shot at," a dispatcher said.

"I got blood coming down my arm. I don't know where it's coming from and I have bullet holes all in my car," the deputy said.

Investigators said both young men and their families were cooperative.

Brandin Kreuzer's father Kevin was shot in the arm in 2004 after pulling over a car on Colfax. He has been a Denver officer for more than 20 years.

Kevin Kreuzer told CBS4 by phone that he remembered the Douglas County shooting. He said he was at home that day and not working.

Hickenlooper's office released a statement that said "our thoughts tonight are with the families and individuals affected by the events leading up to and including yesterday's arrests in Douglas County. We trust in the ability of the criminal justice system to sort out the facts and accountability around all that has happened."
