Ski resorts say keep medical marijuana dispensaries in town, not on mountain.

You can find almost anything at Summit County ski resorts. Mountain view condos, patio restaurants and even something for that sweet tooth. But you'll probably never find medical marijuana and that's how candy store owner Nick Chapin wants to keep it.
"I don't think it's necessary up here on the mountain," said Chapin. "In town is fine, but not on the mountain."
"We wanted to make sure we didn't completely ban them," County Planning Director Jim Curnatte said.
That's as long as they're out of the way. The county is considering tough new regulations on medical marijuana dispensaries barring them from mixed-use buildings, meaning they're not welcomed in places like Copper Mountain and Key Stone.
"That's why we have the separation requirement," explained Curnatte. "To kind of segregate them from close proximity to certain uses."
New plans only leave room for about four dispensaries in unincorporated Summit County. Business owners at the resorts say medical marijuana shops would just waste space.
"The tourists who are up here aren't going to be accessing it," Chapin said. "It's just going to be another space up here that's not going to be making a lot of money."
There will be public comment on the marijuana issue in the county starting next month. The dispensaries are hoping that one day they'll be able to see one of their own shops open at one of the resorts but county officials say that's pretty unlikely.
