Mountain Campsites Full For Holiday Weekend

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) ― There is stiff competition for campsites in Colorado this holiday weekend. In Summit County, every spot is expected to be full by Friday afternoon.

Thousands of trees infected by the pine beetle have been clear cut from many campgrounds. That has led to a lot of competition for prime spots at one popular campground around Lake Dillon.

"There have been several tent trailers, big huge motorhomes, driving around in circles several times looking for a spot," said camper Debbie Byron.

"It's very crowded," said campground host Terry Hunt. He said there are only about 180 camping spots left in Summit County as of Thursday afternoon. It could be too late for anyone wanting to set up after Friday.

"It's close by for the residents of Denver to come up. The weather has finally become nice and everybody is coming out of the woodwork to take advantage of it. I don't blame them," said Hunt.

When beetle-kill trees caused most of the campsites to be clear cut, there was some concern that people wouldn't like the new experience. Instead, they're finding other ways to enjoy themselves.

"Now you can see the view. You look around, you've got these beautiful mountains and all that. You never used to be able to see any of that because you have 100 foot tall lodgepoles all around you," said one camper.
