Coloradans Step Up For Cancer

Written for the Web by CBS4 Special Projects Producer Libby Smith

COMMERCE CITY, Colo (CBS4) ― The battle against cancer is being waged in the lab.

"Cancer is a problem that begins at the molecular or cellular level," said Dr. Tim Byers, interim director of the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

As scientists begin to understand what triggers cancer on the cellular level they can learn what cures it and what prevents it.

"We are making remarkable progress in the war against cancer, but there's a lot more that we have to know - a lot more that we have to do," Byers told CBS4.

Cancer deaths in Colorado peaked in 1991, since then the risk of dying from cancer has been declining. Now more than three dozen Colorado non-profit cancer organizations are coming together to further the fight against cancer. They're organizing Step Up for Cancer, a multi-generational stair-stepping event.

"Stair-stepping for cancer is a new concept," said event director, Kris Franklin.

Hundreds of people will be walking the stairs at Dick's Sporting Goods Park to raise money for local cancer organizations. Along with the stair stepping, the cancer agencies will have booths set up to provide information and awareness about healthy living, prevention, early detection, treatment, access to care, patient and caregiver support.

"Cancer is a scary word, we would like to de-mystify that word and help people understand exactly what it means," said Patrick Gaines, director of major gifts for the American Cancer Society.

Step Up for Cancer runs from 8am to 1pm on Sunday, August 2nd at Dick Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.
