Snowplow Drivers Clear Path For Transplant Patient
DENVER (CBS4) ―
A Wyoming man who drove 500 miles in a major snowstorm to get a new liver in Denver.
Chuck Forbes of
Meeteetse, Wyo., had some big help though in the form of eight snowplow drivers and a state trooper.
Forbes was headed to University Hospital in Denver on Saturday when he was stopped by a roadblock on Interstate 25.
The highway was closed from Wheatland, Wyo., to the Colorado line because of whiteout conditions, but Wyoming State Patrol Trooper Chuck Bloom arranged a special escort from the Wyoming Department of Transportation. It passed the couple off from one plow to the next for 80 miles of closed highway.
"I took this job to make a difference and this is just one of those times when it really did make a difference," Bloom said.
Forbes underwent his liver transplant on Sunday and it was successful.
Ruth Forbes, his wife, says the plow drivers' effort was miraculous.
After authorities told the Forbes they were going to help them get to Colorado, the couple "went from being completely deflated to being elated you could see sparkle and hope come back into their eyes," according to Bloom.
