Small Businesses SCORE Help To Succeed

Written for the Web by CBS4 Special Projects Producer Libby Smith

DENVER (CBS4) ― Small businesses across the country are feeling the squeeze of the economy. A national non-profit is helping entrepreneurs turn their passion into a paycheck.

SCORE matches new and small business owners with volunteers who have a business background. The volunteers mentor the small business owners helping them weather the trials and tribulations of getting a business off the ground.

"We provide guidance. We don't tell someone how to do it we just give them ideas and options," said Bill Boothby, an accredited SCORE Counselor.

Recently Boothby served a counselor to small business owner, Porche Lovely. She wanted to start a cupcake shop but didn't have much business experience.

"I chose cupcakes because they're super hot in the rest of the country and at that point there weren't any cupcake shops in Denver," Lovely told CBS4.

She and Boothby met every week as she planned her new business. He guided through writing her business plan, getting financing, and finding a location for the shop.

"I don't think I would have opened without it," Lovely said.

Lovely Confections has been open on Colfax for 18 months. Lovely has struggled through fluctuating food costs, increased competition, and the waning economy. Boothby has been there every step of the way.

"What Porche has demonstrated is that she has the drive and the energy to work through this," Boothby said.

She continues to call Boothby with questions and seeking advice when her business faces new challenges.

"A lot of it will be growth and how to manage that especially since I do make everything from scratch," Lovely added.

SCORE does one-on-one counseling but they also hold regular workshops. CBS4 is teaming up with SCORE for a daylong small business fair. From 2-7pm on July 15th, counselors will be available at the Lowry Conference Center for 1-hour free sessions. Read The Full Press Release
