Ski Resorts Pump Millions Into Improvements

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) ― The ski season will be here soon and skiers and boarders will notice changes in the high country. Four resorts there are pumping millions of dollars into improvements, including new terrain, lodges and lifts.

A Keystone, the framework for a new gondola is taking shape

"It's time for Keystone to upgrade," Katie Adamson with Keystone Ski Resort said.

The upgrade will get more people up the mountain faster following the same path as the old gondola with a mid-station.

"The new gondola will be an eight-person gondola, rather than a six person gondola," Adamson said. "And we have moved the base of the gondola to the River Run area, so it will be closer."

The plan is to have it open in November.

The goal is to improve the guest experience and hopefully get return business. It is one project contributing to tens of millions of dollars worth of improvements to Summit County ski areas for the upcoming season. At Breckenridge, a new base area will open this winter.

"The Peak 7 Base Area we are really excited about because it's our first base area opening since the Peak 9 Base in 1971," Kristen Petitt with Breckenridge Ski Resort said.

The gondola that runs from town to Peak 8 will now make a stop at the base of Peak 7.

"It really is going to be a way for folks who don't know Breckenridge will or are coming for the first time to access the intermediate terrain of Peak 7 much easier," Petitt said.

The Crystal Peak Lodge has 45 ski-in/ski-out residences that are also rentals. There is also access to the Grand Lodge, time shares and a new restaurant.

"It's a Mediterranean-style restaurant and you can actually ski up to a window and get your food and ski out," Petitt said.

Breckenridge says it's a world-class resort and wants to stay that way.

Copper Mountain is currently building a new state-of-the-art indoor training facility. Snow enthusiasts can practice jumps in a climate-controlled environment and land in foam.

A-Basin is adding 300 new parking spaces.
