Timeline: Colorado's Church Shootings
ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4/AP) ―
Here is a time line of the Colorado church shootings in Arvada and Colorado Springs, based on police reports:
Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007- 12:30 a.m.: A gunman kills two people and injures two others at the Youth With a Mission training center in Arvada, a Denver suburb, after being told he couldn't spend the night. Philip Crouse, 24, and Tiffany Johnson, 26, died, and Charlie Blanch, 22, and Dan Griebenow, 24, were injured.
- 1 p.m.: A gunman with a high-powered rifle kills two people and wounds three others after a service at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs. The gunman died at the scene. Sisters Stephanie Works, 18, and Rachael Works, 16, were killed and their father, David Works, 51, was wounded. Also injured were Judy Purcell, 40, and Larry Bourbannais, 59.
- That afternoon: Police find several smoke-generating devices on the Colorado Springs church campus, possibly to be used to create a distraction.
- That night: Authorities say the attacks could be related.
Monday, Dec. 10, 2007- Authorities identify the gunman as Matthew Murray, 24, of Englewood. Investigators search the Murray house in the Denver suburb for guns, ammunition and computers. Police say in court papers that Murray was asked to leave the missionary training school 5 years ago and had been sending it hate mail.
- Murray's family issues a statement in the evening asking for forgiveness on behalf of their son, and expressing grief for the victims and their families.
Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007
- Reports surface that Murray posted multiple anti-Christian messages online.
- An El Paso County coroner's report states that Murray was shot multiple times by security guard Jeanne Assam but that he died after shooting himself with a bullet.
Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007- About 1,000 people attended a memorial service for Tiffany Johnson and Philip Crouse at Faith Bible Church near the Youth With A Mission campus in Arvada. They shed tears, laughed at anecdotes and sang Christian rock songs. Petra Russell, a close friend of Johnson's, said "I hate that your number will never appear on my Called ID. I hate that, because I miss you. It hasn't even been a week, but it feels like forever."
- That evening, at a "family meeting" at New Life Church on Dec. 12, thousands gathered to remember the victims in a service led by pastor Brady Boyd
Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007- Matthew Murray family released a photo of him to the media. In the photo, which was taken in 1998, Matthew Murray is holding his niece in his lap. Murray's family members said that they are "groping for answers" and praying for the victims' families.
