U.S. Marshals teamed up with law enforcement across Colorado Thursday in a nationwide search to catch unregistered sex offenders. It's called "Operation Shepard."
There are more than 10,000 registered sex offenders in Colorado, roughly twice the number compared to two years ago.
"Pretty much anyone who is out of compliance is who we're trying to track down," said Detective Bob Henderson, Denver Police. "When sex offenders register to an address, they're required to live at that address."
Police estimate there are thousands of sex offenders required to be registered, but are not. Those include illegal immigrants.
Thursday's roundup was organized by the U.S. Marshals office, with help from local police agencies.
Officers believe listing offender's names on the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement Web sites helps the public help authorities.
"If you look at the Web site, all of a sudden you realize this is a guy you've been living next to for three months, and you know him as Joe. All of a sudden you find out he's a wanted sex offender out of Colorado, you're gonna make that call, we hope you make that call," said Roberto Rodriguez, Deputy U.S. Marshal.
"It's very scary, this is a nice thing to see that they are being rounded up. I hope it works, get 'em off the streets, out of my neighborhood," said Audrey, who didn't want her last name used for this story.
The focus of Thursday's sweep was the top 100 sex offenders. As of Thursday afternoon, they had arrested 59. Officers also made more than 1,800 compliance checks to see if registered sex offenders were living where they were supposed to be.
