Sewage Floods Louisville Homes

LOUISVILLE, Colo. (CBS4) ― A sewage back-up in Louisville flooded several homes in one neighborhood late Sunday night and damaged their basements. The homeowners want the city to pay for the repairs.

Eight homes on Syracuse Circle were flooded with the waste water after some tree roots plugged the city sewage line.

"You're pulling the stuff and it's dripping all over you as you're trying to carry bundles of stuff," said Kathy Barnes, one homeowner.

Louisville said it will pay for $3,500 in clean-up for each home. Homeowners said that doesn't begin to cover their losses.

The city said the incident was an act of God, which is why it can't pay more.

"In this case it was just a unique set of circumstances between the sewer system and where the homes were built to allow them to flood at the same time," said Tom Phare of Louisville Public Works.

Phare said he will petition the city council to approve additional money for clean-up and restoration, even though he says the city is not legally liable.

Experts said homeowners would need a special rider to cover an event like a sewage back-up flood. One of the eight homeowners had it.
