Survivors Enjoy Watching 'Stand Up To Cancer'

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ― On Friday, three networks, dozens of celebrities and millions of Americans came together for one cause -- to stand up to cancer. The event was televised on the three broadcast networks and hosted by news anchors Katie Couric, Brian Williams and Charles Gibson.

It was an effort to raise funds for cancer research and encourage scientists to collaborate rather then compete for patient treatment. CBS4's Jodi Brooks watched the program with doctors and cancer patients at the University of Colorado Cancer Center in Aurora to see their reaction.

"I remember going home, nobody was at my house and I remember throwing myself on the floor and rolling around and screaming, 'No!'" cancer survivor Lauren Miller said about learning she had cancer.

Doctors shared their enthusiasm about the publicity the program received.

"It's mind-blowing as to how fast the change is coming now," Dr. Virginia Borges with the University of Colorado Cancer Center said. "It's just a matter of science catching up with what our patients needs are and then we are going to be able to really get on top of a lot of these cancers."

"I really feel that we are the generation that may see the end of cancer," said cancer survivor Dr. Andrew Thorburn.
